Senior Accounting Manager

The senior accounting manager reports to the director of operations and is responsible for playing a key role within a nonprofit organization, overseeing financial operations, ensuring compliance with accounting standards, and supporting the organization’s mission through effective financial management.

Responsibilities:

Accounting

    • Complete day-to-day accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger maintenance.
    • Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
    • Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and nonprofit accounting standards (FASB, IRS regulations, etc.).
    • Monitor financial policies, procedures, and internal controls.
    • Assist in the preparation of the annual budget and track financial performance against budgeted goals.
    • Support annual financial audits, including managing external auditors and preparing necessary documentation.
    • Purchase order processing

Grant & Fund Accounting:

    • Ensure proper tracking and reporting of restricted and unrestricted funds.
    • Prepare and review grant financial reports, ensuring compliance with funding requirements.
    • Assist in grant budgeting, and provide financial guidance for program managers and fundraising teams.

Compliance & Risk Management:

    • Oversee financial compliance with grant agreements, donor restrictions, and funding agency regulations.
    • Maintain adherence to nonprofit best practices and applicable federal and state laws.

Leadership & Team Management:

    • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, ensuring accuracy and efficiency in financial processes.
    • Collaborate with director to provide financial insights and support strategic decision-making.
    • Develop and implement training programs for staff on financial policies and procedures.

Systems & Process Improvement:

    • Optimize accounting systems and financial software to improve efficiency and accuracy.
    • Identify opportunities for automation and process improvements.
    • Implement best practices in financial management and reporting.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field (CPA or MBA preferred)
  • Minimum of 4 to 7 years of accounting experience
  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, including fund accounting and grant compliance
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks Online Advanced)
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills
  • Detail-oriented with a high level of integrity and financial responsibility
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate across departments
  • Experience with QuickBooks Online Advanced preferred.
  • Proficiency in Excel preferred.
  • Professional certification (e.g. CPA) preferred.
  • Non-profit accounting experience preferred.
